A Reason To Smile: Sam and Anna's Story

Sam smiles. He is always smiling.

His 13-year-old sister Anna flashes a grin in return, but Sam doesn’t register his sister’s sparkly brown eyes or the way she beams at him.

Confined to a wheelchair, 17-year-old Sam has Down Syndrome and Spina Bifida. He’s non-verbal, gets his nutrition through a feeding tube and his world consists mostly of the small living room and smaller bedroom of the single-wide mobile home that the family shares.

The Muller family consists of teenagers Anna and Sam, their two-year-old brother Kevin, father Nick and his girlfriend Melissa.

Nick works six days a week for a landscaping company and has a hard time making ends meet. Adding to the burden of financial instability is a $2000 hospital bill looming over Nick’s head.

He was beaten up in a gas station robbery last year. They took his money and left him with a broken nose, anxiety and a mountain of bills.

Life is not supposed to be easy, but is it supposed to be this hard?

And yet, the home is filled with love and joy.

Even more so now that Melissa is pregnant with the couple’s first child together.

Anna serves as the secondary caretaker of her older brother after her father and his girlfriend and despite this additional responsibility, she is still an honor student with big dreams.

The Mullers were referred to Community Partners and we are currently working with them to make sure they get the resources they need through our housing and child and family therapy programs.

In the meantime, we are hoping you can help Change The Odds for Anna and her family.

In addition to donating directly to Community Partners, you can donate baby clothes, diapers (both for babies and size 4 for Sam) and wipes to The Muller Family.

We accept donations during business hours: Monday through Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

If you are interested in donating goods, please email us.

Sam smiles. He is always smiling.

Let’s give Sam a reason to smile even brighter.
