Together, We Are Changing The Odds - Angela's Story

Angela stared at herself in the mirror, water dripping from her face. Her mind flashed back to the yelling and how angry her boyfriend had been.

She couldn’t do this anymore. She wouldn’t do this anymore.

She had to leave. For herself, yes. But more for her children – three innocent babies who deserved to grow up without the terror and trauma inflicted by domestic abuse.

So, she left. Fleeing to a family member’s house in Jupiter, scared for her life and scared for what the blank future might bring.

When Angela came to Community Partners, our Targeted Case Management team got to work.

They linked Angela and her sons with local non-profit Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) immediately and while there were no beds immediately available for the family, Angela’s case manager linked her to various resources providing food, clothing and diapers.

We knew that this was a stopgap measure and that in order to thrive, the family would need a more stable home life, so Angela’s case manager connected her with Career Source Palm Beach County. Working in tandem, we knew that Angela would be able to secure meaningful employment which would help her find a safe and stable home for her family.

This was a major stressor in Angela’s life as her temporary living situation with family had fallen through and she had nowhere else to go.

Broke, out of options and with nowhere to go, she decided to spend the next night in a local park.

Thankfully, she made her case manager aware of the situation and he sprang into action. There was no way a single mother and her children were going to spend the night in a park.

Community Partners reached out to a local organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence and they were able to accommodate Angela and her children with temporary housing, support services and counseling specifically designed for victims of domestic abuse.

Days after being placed, Angela called her case manager.

Now, Angela has found a sense of safety and peace. She has started to heal and is focused on a brighter future for herself and her family. Renewed by this sense of stability, Angela expects to secure housing and employment within six months and she’s working towards getting her GED.

Community Partners’ name is at the crux of our mission. We partner with the community – clients, non-profits and other organizations – to build resilience, cultivate promise and hone the skills necessary to achieve self-sufficiency, stability and success.

Working together, we are Changing The Odds for Palm Beach County’s children and families facing adversity.
